Outdoor Sports Stock Photography

For those working in the Outdoor Sports market, getting a source of stock photography can be difficult.  There are lots of outdoor sports photographers out there, but many just take images they can sell to the competitors, these tend to be very personal shots capturing the individual rather than the the atmosphere of the event or sport. Racing Snakes has now added a Gallery of photos suitable for Outdoor Sports Stock Photography. The album of stock photography can be found here Outdoor Sports Photography

Sports Event Photography 2017

The benefits of having professional sports event photography and media of your event is essential to any well run event. A professional service for your sports event not only brings back memories but also provides future marketing material. It also brings added benefits for sponsors and supporters. There are some professional photography services that take images of competitors but offer little else, read on to see why racingsnakes photography offers much more for you and your sports event.

Event Photography

The are many options for getting the most out of your images and depending on the sporting event and sponsors requirements these do vary. Racingsnakes can provide advice on what will work best for your event, this maybe to maximise reach of the sports event using social media or maintaining that valuable relationship you have with your sponsors and supporters.

Event photography can be broken down into two types, ‘photos of people’ and ‘photos for marketing’. Here at racing snakes photography, both types are catered for.
People Photography – There are some event photography services that stand in one place (usually at the side of a road) and take similar images of every athlete. They don’t like to venture to far from their cars! Fine for some, and they do sell to athletes that just want a picture of themselves competing in the sports event on the day. The other and prefered option of racingsnakes is to get athletes in the best location on the course. This maybe a climb or descent on a sportive with a great backdrop or mountainous checkpoint on a ultra run with moody skies that reflects the true feeling of an event.
Marketing Photography – This is very different from the ‘athlete running shot’. If you are planning on expanding your event or just need professional photographs of your event for flyers, banners and your website. Athlete photos are fine for the individual but often these lack the requirements of capturing the bigger picture and perhaps the key selling point of the sports event.

Share The Love – The Racingsnakes Photostore

Having great imagery for the athletes and yourself is just the start of it. You will need a way to be able to share the images and more. Here at Racingsnakes there are great professional options for doing just this.
Share the professional sports photography on the photostore. This allows for images to be instantly downloaded or prints ordered, but that’s not all. Voucher codes can be used and prices set for each gallery of images, so depending on your needs you might wish to choose to offer your competitors free images.
The photostore allows for other professional photographers to also upload their images from the sports event and sell within the photostore making sure all the images from the event are kept in one place and easy to find.

That’s got your attention!  Probably the best way to promote your event is to employ a photographer.  People love to see pictures of their friends, or for the more vain, themselves :-). A sports photographer will come along for a fee, snap away on their digital SLR and at the end of the day you have hundreds of photo’s of your event to do as you please.  If you choose to share these with your customers for free via the likes of facebook it becomes a very powerful marketing tool for your next event.  For every photo that gets tagged it is seen by that persons friends, the average facebook user now has 190 friends, thats means each person tagged is potentially seen by 190 potential racers (and thats without photo shares), add your logo to the event, encourage likes on your page and you have a great marketing tool.  That’s just the start, with other social sites like twitter, instagram etc. along with your blog and website and you soon get the idea of just how valuable a sports event photographer is.

To get the most out of your investment in a sports photographer you should get someone that not only knows photography but also knows about the sport and racing (that’s me!!!).  It’s no good employing a sports photographer that is out of breath looking at a hill never mind climbing one with heavy kit on his or her back, if all the action is taking place up on the hills. As a racer I know the likley best lines the racers will take, ensuring I am at the right spot with camera in hand rather than stood 500m away looking in the wrong direction.   I have plenty of experience in adventure racing/ fell running, mountain biking, ultra running and navigation events.

I will come along to take your event photography, taking high quality sports photographs of your event for a fixed fee (hourly rate + travel).  Post event I will use lightroom to enhance the photo’s  and add logos/ branding as required. I can offer advice on marketing and getting the most from the photographs. Introductory offer of only £130 for full day (£70 half day).

Trailquest – Mountain Bike Orienteering

A great way of racking up the miles on a mountain bike without noticing the distance you are covering is to take part in a mountain bike orienteering event (although there is also lanequest, which can be done on road bikes).The concentration and adrenaline and racing against the clock and fellow competitors totally distracts from the distance you are covering.
There are two main types of mountain bike orienteering events the first is MBO score (also known as Trailquest or MTBO Score);
The score events are based on a time limit rather than distance to be covered. The idea is that you get a map (usually pre-marked Ordnance Survey Type) which has the control points marked on it. Each control point (also known as checkpoint) has a value, you decide which controls you will visit with the aim of collecting the most points within the time limit. The skill is to decide just which points are worth getting and in which order for your fitness level. If you go over the time limit you start loosing points! (you really don’t want that to happen). The time limits depends on the course organiser but usually the time limit is set between 2 and 5 hours. Control points are often marked with an orange and white orienteering flag (also known as a kite), beware though they are not always and it depends on the organiser (check when you enter the event). The controls are sometimes orienteering punch clips (pins which mark pattern on paper) or the new electronic punches (such as sportident).
The second format is MTBO (without the score on the end);
MTBO events are based on getting round a course in as quickly as possible. They are still map based events but use orienteering maps. These events are often held in forests or areas with good network of trails. There are often different levels of course so if you are a beginner don’t worry as you can choose a course that will be suitable to your fitness and map reading skills. The winner of these events is simply the quickest person to get round all the checkpoints marked on the course. Again this is measured by orienteering punch or electronic punches.

Apart from the obvious equipment such as bike and helmet etc. you may wish to use a mapboard, this aids navigation on the bike, practice first though before you hit the trails and never get distracted by looking at the map (I have seen someone run into a car whilst reading the map on the move).
